    Grimes, Iowa is located in the northwest Des Moines Metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881, incorporated in 1894, and named after Iowa’s third governor, James W. Grimes.


    Grimes is in both Dallas and Polk counties and is included in the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community benefits from the Metro’s social and economic opportunities due to its close proximity to Interstate 80 and 35.     Grimes, along with Dallas Center form the Dallas Center-Grimes Community School district. The high school campus is located outside of Grimes at 2555 W 1st Street and houses grades 10 through 12. Grades 8 and 9 are at Meadows and are also a part of this campus. The middle school, made of grades 6 and 7, are located in Dallas Center.


    Dallas Center-Grimes also has four elementary schools (all located in Grimes): Dallas Center Elementary in Dallas Center, South Prairie Elementary, North Ridge Elementary, and Heritage Elementary. The portion of the town located east of Iowa Highway 141 is served by the Johnston Community School District.

    Grimes has plenty of trails, parks, and venues to suit your recreational needs. The main park is Water Works Park and is home to the public library. The south end of Grimes has a sports complex that includes a skate park, soccer fields, and baseball fields.


    Grimes has many parks that are perfect for events, entertainment, and burning off energy. All the parks, trails, and sports complexes in Grimes are smoke, tobacco, and alcohol-free and observe the same hours: Park Hours are from 5:30 am – 10:00 pm.

    Autumn Park This park has .5 acres of land. It also has playground equipment, swings, a half basketball court, trails, and benches
    Beaverbrooke Park This park has a shelter, grill, 2 picnic tables, and play-set (no electrical is provided).
    Glenstone Park This park has 3.6 acres of land. It has a 20′ wide open gazebo with 2 picnic tables (no electrical or grill provided).
    Grimes Community Complex The gym is often used b sports teams for practice. It’s also used by adults to play pick-up volleyball and basketball games. The Parks and Recreation Office is also located in this building. Citizens can rent the court as well as different reunions, meetings, and celebrations.
    Grimes Community Complex Park This park has new equipment swing-sets, play-set with multiple slides and structures for ages 0-12. It also has basketball hoops, sand volleyball court, green space, soccer goals, and a picnic area.
    North Sports Complex This park has 2 picnic tables, restrooms, sand volleyball courts, and the big play structure (electrical provided).
    North Pointe Park This park has 3.48 acres of land. It has a play structure, swing set, 16′ square open shelter, and two picnic tables.
    South Sports Complex This park has 2 tennis courts; multiple soccer fields including one lit tournament field; three sand volleyball courts; three softball fields; four baseball fields; two basketball courts (4 hoops); a skate park; walking trails; restrooms; 2 concession stands, and a large play structure.
    Kennybrook South This park has 4.15 acres of land. It has a shelter, playground equipment, 1/2 basketball court, and green space for open play.
    Lions Park This park has 4.8 acres of land. It has an open shelter, two grills, 4 picnic tables, 1/2 basketball court, two baseball/softball fields, soccer field, and playground equipment (electrical outlets are provided).
    Shawver Park This park has 4 acres of land. It is a neighborhood park located off of Shawver Drive. It has a shelter, 2 picnic tables, grill, and play structure.
    Waterworks Park This park has two open shelters with electricity, two playgrounds, sand volleyball court, basketball hoop, open green space, and three ball diamonds. It also has 4 picnic tables that are located at the west shelter and 7 picnic tables at the east shelter.
